Hikaru no Go Anime Summary
Hikaru no Go is a story about
a boy in sixth grade Shindou Hikaru who meets and shares his mind with a
ghost from the Edo period in Japan called Fujiwara no Sai, who used to teach
the Emperor to play Go, a Japanese strategy game. Sai drowned himself after
being falsely accused of
cheating and cast out of the city. He first possessed a boy called Torajirou who later changed his name to
Shuusaku and with Sai playing his games became the most famous Go player in
history. After Torajirou died Sai possessed a Go board and it's a thousand
years later that Hikaru meets him in his grandpa's attic. Sai then possesses Hikaru who has never played Go before in his life, but
discovers a love for the game under Sai's tutelage and the story takes us
through Hikaru's gradual accumulation of knowledge of the game Go and the
challenges he faces along the way. (You even get to see Hikaru and Touya, the
main characters, age as the series progresses, which you don't see enough of
in anime!)
Although the series isn't exactly fast-paced with fight scenes and
amazing animation it's a character development piece that sees Hikaru
getting more mature (Thank God) as the story goes on and although Hikaru
becomes a strong Go player he doesn't start out that way - he has his own
share of failures just like the rest of us, which makes me like the series
more for its sheer down-to-earth realism!
