Fruits Basket is a sweet comedy about a girl Honda Tohru who lost her mother in a car accident and selflessly decides to live on her own (in a tent in the forest) so as not to be a burden on anyone while her grandfather renovates his home where she's to stay.

She happens to be camped on the land of the Sohma family and comes across Shigure's home whilst walking to school and bumps into Yuki Sohma the most popular guy in school. Eventually it comes about where the Sohma's offer to let her live with them as camping out is dangerous and she works as their housekeeper to cover her room and board.

An unexpected visit from the rogue member of the Sohma family, Kyo, leads Tohru to the discovery of the Sohma's family secret; certain members of the family are cursed and when hugged by a person of the opposite sex they turn into one of the twelve animals of the Zodiac!!

This story is enormously funny and very character-driven as Tohru goes about discovering each new Zodiac family member and their various qualities and smoothes the discord between the Rat (Sohma Yuki) and the Cat (Sohma Kyo) who were born enemies...
