  Yakitate Japan Anime Summary

Azuma Kazuma is the main character of the story. He is honest and simple and it's his dream to make 'Japan' a bread that will represent Japan, similar to how a baguette represents France (Japan is a pun, as 'Pan' means bread in Japanese). To succeed at his dream Azuma travels to Tokyo to join Pantasia a famous bakery chain, but arrives not to the apprenticeship job he expected but to an exam against more than 30 other bakers attempting to join Pantasia. He doesn't make a very good start as the strict examiner Kuroyanagi (Kuro-yan as he's later dubbed - what an ace character!!) deducts 5 points from him for being late and then takes a further 2 for having scruffy hair!! Azuma's chances then seem hopeless, but he is unfazed and determines to do his best. His confidence is noted by two other bakers; Azusagawa Tsukino a girl who stands up to Kuroyanagi about Azuma's hair and also Kawachi Kyousuke a guy with bleach blond hair and a Kansai dialect, who is the first to discover Azuma's 'secret weapon'. Unknown to Azuma he has what other bakers call 'Solar Hands' - uncommonly warm hands that produce an ideal temperature when kneading dough for yeast to ferment producing amazing results...

Worried as to what kind of bread Azuma will produce after sampling a sweet An-pan bread Azuma made, Kawachi deliberately sabotages Azuma's dough. Azuma has to give up the attempt at making another 'Japan' and instead makes one of his other creations as he does not have enough time left in the exam for another dough to rise... What kind of reaction will it produce?! See for yourself as Kuro-yan does the taste-test!!

Oh my God I got so much stick for watching Yakitate Japan - kayin_chan could not believe I was watching an anime about baking bread, but this is an amazing series. Granted I haven't watched it all, I felt it started to drag a bit after the first 25 episodes or so, but it is hilariously funny and inspiring. I made my own bread from scratch, just because I felt like it after watching the series! I'd recommend anyone give it a try. Kuro-yan is by far the best character and if you watch it you'll know what I mean!!!
