  Twelve Kingdoms Anime Summary

Nakajima Yoko is the Class Representative at school. She has hair with a reddish tint and is frowned upon by others because it should be black, even her family wish she would dye it to fit in better. Yoko does nothing but try to fit in, she always suppresses her real feelings and tries to please everyone, with the result that she never actually pleases anyone. She is friends with Asano who she has a slight crush on and Yuka a girl she ignores at school because everyone else dislikes her, but still tries to act friendly towards out of school...

Yoko has nightmares about monsters trying to kill her and then at school one day a blonde man named Keiki appears before her and kneels to her, claiming she is his master. He gets her to accept him thereby forming a contract between the two of them then protects her from the attack of a large bird monster by summoning other Youma (demon monsters). Yoko finds the situation hard to accept and refuses to cooperate with his efforts. Eventually he puts a Hinman inside her to control her body so she can fight using what he calls the 'Water-Jade Blade' and Yoko reluctantly slays the creature. Keiki then wishes to take her through to another world, which Yoko does not want. Keiki opens up a vortex called a 'Shoku' and they are carried through, but become separated due to the attack of more Youma.

Yoko awakes on a beach and her appearance has considerably changed, she now has fully red hair and green eyes, with slightly different features. What's more as she stumbles into a nearby village it becomes clear that she can speak the language unlike Yuka who she later meets up with. Her reception in the land of the Twelve Kingdoms is not warm though and Yoko must struggle through many trials and discoveries, developing from the whiny self-effacing character she starts out to a genuine, strong and caring leader.

Twelve Kingdoms is an anime with a brilliant story, it comprises of a series of arcs focusing on different characters individual lives within the main story as well and so goes deeper than a lot of other anime. It is not a comedy, but more of an adventure story mixed with drama and angsty situations...

Taiki's arc is by far the best!! But I'll shut up about that!
