InuyashaInuyasha is the original anti-hero; half demon, half human he begins the story pinned to a tree by an arrow locked in an eternal sleep... yeah right! Kagome stumbles along and frees him from the sleep so he can rescue her, but he's much more interested in stealing the sacred jewel from her so he can change into a fully-fledged demon. Inuyasha was bound to the tree by Kikyo 50 years ago, when the evil bad guy Naraku tricked the two budding lovers into hating each other... Kikyo lost her life in the struggle and was burned along with the sacred jewel she was guarding, only to be reincarnated as Kagome in modern day Japan.

Kagome Kagome lives in modern day Japan. When she goes into her family's shrine in search of their missing cat Buyo (at her brother Sota's request) she is pulled into a well by a Centipede demon and crosses over into feudal Japan. There she is chased by demons as the sacred jewel is imbedded in her body and they all seek it's power. To escape the clutches of one such demon, she frees Inuyasha from where he is bound to a sacred tree, unwittingly unleashing hell as Inuyasha then starts trying to steal the jewel. With the help of an old Priestess Kaede who puts an enchanted bead necklace on Inuyasha, and Kagomes magic word 'Sit!' Inuyasha is soon brought to heel (quite literally). Unfortunately with all the demons chasing the jewel, it is eventually stolen and in the race to get it back Kagome shoots the demon with an arrow and ends up shattering the jewel, upon which both she and Inuyasha must embark on a journey to recover the shards before the reek havoc in the feudal era.

Miroku Miroku (or Hoshi-sama, as he's otherwise known) is an apprentice monk. Famed far and wide for his wenching unethical ways, Miroku thinks nothing of tricking local lords into offering him food and shelter for the night in exchange for 'exorcising' their manners of dangerous spirits... Miroku approaches any young, good-looking woman and asks if they will bear his child... he tends to get slapped fairly regularly - particularly by Sango. Miroku has also been cursed, as his father was before him, by Naraku - his right hand contains a wind tunnel that can suck up anything and will eventually take his life, unless the one who made the curse is destroyed. Despite being lecherous, he does also have somewhat useful spiritual powers as well, often using sutures and his staff to help the gang defeat demons...

Sango Sango comes from a village of Demon Slayers and joins Kagome, Inuyasha, Shippo and Miroku when her family is slaughtered. Her brother Kohaku is imbedded with a sacred jewel shard and becomes embroiled in Naraku's evil plots... Sango wields a special weapon called Hiraikotsu, which is made from the bones of demons. Her pet, is a cute cat/fox demon called Kirara, who can be small and cute or transform and be large and ferocious. Sango falls (somehow) in love with Miroku and is constantly being thwarted in their relationship by his own roguish ways!!

Shippo Shippo is a cute fox demon, who's father was killed by the Hiten brothers so they could possess his sacred jewel shard. He initially tries stealing Kagome's jewel shards in order to seek his revenge, but ends up needing rescuing by Inuyasha... hmm that pretty much sums Shippo up for the rest of the series as well, as he constantly needs rescuing! Shippo can transform in to what I can only describe as a pink bubble, that can float. He also uses fox magic, which for the most part is full of tricks, like spinning tops and crying mushrooms. His fox-fire wouldn't give you so much as a mild singe, but looks kinda scary... sometimes...

Kikyo Kikyo is a Shrine Priestess who was killed by Naraku (disguised in the form of Inuyasha). She bound Inuyasha to a tree in eternal sleep and told her younger sister Kaede to burn her body with the sacred jewel to keep it out of evil hands. Kagome is her reincarnation, but when Kagome ventures into the feudal era to search for the sacred jewel shards with Inuyasha Kikyo is revived using part of her soul. An evil witch captures Kagome and uses graveyard soil and Kikyo's bones to create a body for her. Kikyo has enormous spirit power and soon takes care of the witch Urasue and then pursues her own course of vengeance...

Naraku Naraku... hmmm how to describe his evilness?? The ultimate bad guy, who never seems to die... yup and very annoying to boot. He tends no to dirty his hands directly, but prefers to lay traps for our heroes and manipulate them. He is actually a half demon, but unlike Inuyasha he used to be human. He was a murderous thief named Onigumo, who was paralysed from the neck down and fell in love with Kikyo as she nursed him. He gave up his soul to demons in exchange for a body so he could have Kikyo, but the demons took over and killed Kikyo in order to possess the sacred jewel. Naraku is trying to get rid of Onigumo's heart so that he can kill Kikyo, who is his main weakness... [TOP] |
