Fushigi Yuugi (or The Mysterious Play) is a story based around a girl named Miaka. She is kind, dense and a glutton, struggling to study so that she can pass the entrance exams for Jonan Academy - a high class school that her mother wants her to aim for. Miaka and her friend Yui stumble across a book in the library entitled "Legend of the Four Gods" and when they start reading they are swept into a world similar to ancient China where they're immediately beset by slave-traders. They get saved by a very handsome stranger who then gets peeved because they have no money to repay him for his dazzling rescue. While Miaka fumbles around for her purse Yui chases after the man in anger but is swept back to the library, leaving Miaka stranded.

Miaka jumps to the conclusion that their rescuer kidnapped Yui to sell her and chases off in the direction he left to find him. As a strangely dressed girl she encounters trouble and is saved by him again and eventually introduced - his name is Tamahome and he has the Chinese character for Demon on his forehead.

They eventually end up in a dungeon until Miaka takes on the role of Priestess of Suzaku to save the country of Konan and must journey to find the seven Celestial Warriors (Tamahome being one of them), so that they can summon the God Suzaku who will grant her 3 wishes.

So the storyline sounds a tad cliché, but this is an exciting anime. It has bundles of humour, romance between Tamahome and Miaka and plenty of action.
